Synthetism was a strand of Symbolism in France that surfaced in the late 1880s. It argued that artists should synthesise  their observations of the world with both emotions and  aesthetic considerations. Paintings were flat in appearance which included large areas of bold colour. This movement was forgotten as an avant-garde movement.

An example of this is called ‘Vision of the Sermon (Jacob Wrestling with the angle)’, 1888 by Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was associated with the Symbolism and Post- Impressionism.
